The three daughters of John and Esther.
Mary Jane Broadbent.
Mary Jane was born in April 1839, and died on August 2 1864. She was the eldest daughter, closest in age to William and Butterworth. She managed the household for William in London for quite a few years, but her declining health eventually sent her home.
She never married, and died at barely 25 years of age.
Sarah Anne Broadbent
Sarah Ann – or Anne – was born on 19 October 1842. The 4th of John and Esther‘s children.
She lived at the family home, Longwood Edge, until the marriage of her youngest brother, Arthur. At that time a house was built for her at Oakscar, and she lived here for the rest of her life.
She had a thirst for knowledge, and reading. She was a keen observer, keeping detailed journals; and she travelled widely in England, Europe and Jerusalem.
A committed Christian she was active in chapel and Sunday School up to the end of her life. She had taught herself Greek and some Hebrew, primarily so that she could read the Bible in the original languages.
She never married, and died in about 1930.
Eliza Broadbent
Eliza was born on 12 January 1848, thus sharing a birthday with her mother.
She had a Shakespeare-esque thwarted romance with a suitor her family deemed unsuitable, followed by a broken engagement to one who appears to have been a fortune hunter.
A determination to reunite with her first love finally gained a grudging consent, only to end tragically in his unexpected and sudden death.
She married John Burnley Walker, a doctor, in August 1881, and they lived at Golcar, close to Longwood.
According to one report, John died “in unknown circumstances at sea” about 1905.
According to the London Gazette of Feb 13, 1894, John Burnley Walker of The Sycamores, Golcar, in the county of York, died on 9th Dec 1893. The executors of his will were named as Eliza Broadbent Walker, Edward Walker M.D., and Benjamin Broadbent, M.A.
Eliza married again, to a Mr. Fisher, and went to live with him at Harrogate. She died in about 1925.
A son Jack, was born in 1883. He married Jessie (née Faulder) in 1914, and died of tuberculosis in the same year.
A second son Cecil (birthdate unknown) became a doctor and practised at Malton in the North Riding. He married Jessie (née McRay), and they had five children.
